Master of Science in Health Informatics alumnus Jordan Hilsman (MSHI ‘23) has been selected among a competitive pool of nationwide candidates for an eight-month National Institutes of Health training program called AIM-AHEAD (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity). Its goal is to increase researcher diversity in artificial intelligence and machine learning by training individuals from diverse backgrounds who are committed to gaining proficiency in AI/ML data analysis and applying their expertise to benefit communities underrepresented in biomedical research.

The University of Pittsburgh Doctor of Chiropractic program is eight terms, or 2 and 2/3 years, which includes two summer terms. This will be the shortest length chiropractic program in the United States, but it meets or exceeds all Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) standards with 4,200 total hours of instruction including over 1,900 hours of clinical instruction.

The mission of the University of Pittsburgh Doctor of Chiropractic program is to produce and inspire empathetic, patient-centered health care professionals. This will be done by providing an innovative, evidence-based and clinically robust education that sets Pitt apart from other chiropractic programs in the country. Facets Magazine Feature:“Pitt offers one of the only athletic training programs in the country that requires students to earn their EMT certification prior to admission to the Athletic Training program,” notes Assistant Professor and Director Amy Aggelou. “We try to prepare our students for the worst-case scenarios and their EMT certification provides a solid foundation from day one in our program. Clearly this training led Autumn to do all the right things at the right time.”

Conley, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health education from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland, was recognized for myriad achievements throughout his professional career.

Christie-Lee Coad, cohead athletic trainer for USA Track and Field, is headed to Paris in July for the Olympic Games. She attended Pitt for graduate school from 2008-10, getting her master's degree in sports medicine. She also was a graduate assistant for athletic training, working with swimming and diving.

Ed Strapp, an athletic trainer and paramedic, will be supporting Team USA as a medical volunteer. A state trooper/flight paramedic with the Maryland State Police assigned to the Aviation Division, he graduated from Pitt in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in exercise and sports medicine with a specialization in athletic training.

Distinguished Professor and Founder and Director of the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL), Rory Cooper, won a bronze medal in the 4x400 meter wheelchair relay in 1988 and continues to contribute to Team USA. He has been named to the United States Olympians and Paralympians Association’s (USOPA) Executive Committee and will be in Paris to assist the athletes at the Paralympic Games this summer.

The Master of Science in Athletic Training program recently received exciting news – the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) granted it 10 years of continuing accreditation, the most that can be approved for a program! The next required comprehensive review will be set for the 2032-2033 academic year.

New Pitt P&O alumna, Caitlin Bowman, shares her final clinical internship experience at Childrens's Healthcare of Atlanta Orthotics and Prosthetics Department where she gained a variety of skills that will carry over into her new two-year residency and future career!

Following graduation from the University of Pittsburgh Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program, Rebekah Funk (OTD ’23) accepted an occupational therapy position at Life’s Work of Western PA, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities to engage in meaningful employment. In collaboration with the Life’s Work team, Funk designed and implemented an innovative approach to assessment and training of job skills for individuals with disabilities.

The inaugural SHRS Dean’s Annual Staff Excellence Awards were announced by Dean Anthony Delitto at the State of the School on April 4. The awards are an important gesture honoring SHRS staff who go above and beyond their daily responsibilities and whose actions support the mission and values of the SHRS and Pitt community. The four deserving winners were: the Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award to Anastasia White, the Debora L. Miller Award for Leadership and Operations Award to Jessica Thomas, the Research and Scholarly Activity Mission Administration Award to Laura Waterstram, and the Student Impact Award to Joyce Broadwick.

When Bethany Beckwith was working in an outpatient clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic, she became frustrated and burnt out with health care delivery. She found herself wanting to embark on more academic endeavors, searching to extend her prior degree in occupational therapy. It was during her searches that she came across the Doctor of Clinical Science in Occupational Therapy program at Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, something that ignited her passions once again.
