The University of Pittsburgh Adaptive Driving Program has officially launched its new website and has made a new home in Forbes Tower!
The Adaptive Driving Program is a driver rehabilitation program aimed at assisting drivers and providing assessments, resources and adaptive equipment to those in need.
The program emphasizes that driving means freedom, and adaptive driving means independence. Its mission is to empower individuals with the skills and support they need to experience the freedom that comes with being behind the wheel, committing to improving their clients’ lives and adapting to their specific driving needs.
Many individuals may experience physical limitations that impede their independence. The Adaptive Driving Program conducts personalized assessments with driver rehabilitation specialists to determine driving readiness and develop necessary skills to navigate the road safely. The program provides many solutions for various circumstances – including specialized training, vehicle modifications and adaptive driving equipment to increase accessibility for all drivers.
While the Adaptive Driving Program focuses on driving rehabilitation to clients, the program also works with SHRS faculty to serve as guest presenters in classrooms, providing SHRS students with knowledge about driver rehabilitation services and adaptive driving equipment.
“Clients seeking services, depending on their needs, can expect a comprehensive driving evaluation and individualized training sessions as needed with or without adaptive equipment to resume or maintain driving,” Melissa Aleksak, director of the Adaptive Driving Program, said. “Whether you know someone in need of driving rehabilitation services or are interested in sharing the world of driving rehabilitation with your students, please feel free to contact us!”
The Adaptive Driving Program’s new website can be accessed here. The website provides an outline of the services offered through the program, access to client resources and the ability to submit a request to get evaluated.
To stop by in-person, the Adaptive Driving Program office has officially moved into Forbes Tower Suite 6073.
