A career in rehabilitation technology combines personal experience, academic pursuit and a passion for making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities. Kayden Gill, a 2023 graduate of the Master of Rehabilitation Technology (MRT) program, shared his journey, experiences and aspirations within this dynamic industry.

Pursuing a Master of Rehabilitation Technology Degree

Gill's academic journey began at The Ohio State University, where he studied health sciences and completed a certificate program in assistive and rehabilitative technology. His personal experience with having a visual impairment and being a manual wheelchair user sparked a deep interest in assistive technology. Through interactions within the disability community, Gill developed a strong desire to understand the origins of assistive technology and how it can be tailored to individuals' needs. That is what led him to pursue an MRT degree at the University of Pittsburgh.

An Immersive Learning Experience

The MRT program offers a diverse learning environment that combines remote and hybrid interfaces.

“I enjoyed the program's emphasis on synchronous engagement, fostering a sense of community among students despite remote learning,” Gill said. “One of the program's standout features was the opportunity to interact with professionals already working in the field, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities.”

Diving Deep into Assistive Technology

Unlike traditional online programs, MRT offers hands-on experiences through Deep Dives, where students immerse themselves into practical aspects of rehabilitation technology.

Gill shared, “It was so important to gain firsthand knowledge, such as understanding different types of wheelchairs, to better serve future clients. The MRT program's focus on interactive discussions and group work enhanced learning and created a collaborative atmosphere.”

The MRT Commitment to YOU

Each student in the MRT program has the opportunity to complete an internship in the field of rehabilitation technology. Gill's internship focused on research in Smart Home Technology, particularly exploring the use of smart speakers and voice assistants for individuals with disabilities. The MRT program supports students in securing internships tailored to their individual interests and is committed to personalized growth and development.

Gill's future plans include pursuing a Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree at The Ohio State University, delving deeper into academic research while maintaining a clinical practice focus. A strong research and clinical practice base were provided by his internship during the MRT degree program.

Industry Potential and Impact

The field of assistive and rehabilitative technology holds immense potential for innovation and growth. With a blend of policy, engineering and clinical expertise, Gill hopes to facilitate transformative advancements in the field.

“This is an industry that really has been building for a very long time,” Gill said. “It is on the cusp of a real explosion of possibility. And because it’s so small right now, you have a real chance to be in those really important circles and communicate with those people who are major stakeholders in the industry and have the opportunity to see your work make tangible change.”
