“The Bridging the Gaps (BTG) program has been a cornerstone for change and learning, offering me an immersive experience in community service while directly impacting underserved communities,” said Mengjun (Kate) Wang, a second-year Sports Medicine student.

Wang referred to her involvement with the BTG Internship this summer as a “transformational journey” after the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) had its first-ever involvement with the program, organized by Pitt’s School of Public Health.

I chose Pitt's DPAS online program because being a mom of two young boys, wife and full-time professional, I needed a program that was flexible. Pitt's program, being 100% online and completed in one year, affords me the flexibility I need to still achieve my long-term career goals. If you would have asked me when I graduated from physician assistant (PA) school in 2006 if I'd ever go back to school, I would have resoundingly said, “No way!”  If you would have asked me the same question just a year and a half ago when I continued to be a clinically practicing PA, I again would have said, “No way!”

I applied for the University of Pittsburgh Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science program on the last day that applications were open! It was a lazy summer day, and I’d been lingering around the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) website, rather clueless about what major I’d pursue, but knew that I was “pre-Physician Assistant (PA)” and working to fulfill those prerequisites. The Nutrition Science program was rather a spur-of-the-moment decision, but it wasn’t arbitrary and also happened to be a very correct one.

Assistant Professor Allyn Bove (SHRS ’20) became interested in studying health disparities while observing the needs of patients in a free New York City medical clinic during her physical therapy education at Columbia University. After returning to Pittsburgh and working in a private practice that offered frequent pro bono physical therapy services to uninsured patients, she became passionate about the topic and decided to pursue a PhD at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). The program combined her interests in arthritis and joint replacement with her growing dedication to understand and address health disparities.

June Bracken (CSBA ’23) grew up in Wexford, Pennsylvania, and originally wanted to pursue a career in music. Her talents included singing and playing a variety of instruments, which led her to the music therapy program at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Professor Kelley Fitzgerald recently retired after spending 25 years as a faculty member in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Therapy. Kelley was a professor within the Clinical and Translational Research Institute, founder and inaugural director of the University of Pittsburgh Physical Therapy Clinical and Translational Research Center (PT-CTRC) and associate dean of Graduate Studies in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS).

In the mid 1960’s after Keith Erb (PT ’65)  graduated from West Virginia University, he enrolled in the D.T. Watson School of Physiatrics in Sewickley, PA, which was where Pitt’s physical therapy program began in 1927. At the time, it was a one-year certificate program and men made up one-third of the program’s students. They attended classes or labs for eight hours a day and had four to five hours of studying each night. Keith’s one special treat each school week was to watch 30 minutes of his favorite television show, Mayberry RFD, with his wife Barb.

Second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Hybrid student Amanda Klein from Spokane, WA, has started her third of four clinical education placements in the DPT program this summer. Klein, a U.S. Air Force veteran, was awarded a special clinical education placement at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and is writing a short blog series about her experience. Her insight is valuable to any student preparing for their clinical education placement, whether in another city or in their hometown!

University of Pittsburgh Doctor of PA Studies (DPAS) student Gianna Coscia (DPAS ‘24) from Buffalo, NY, began the online program in summer 2023 while continuing to work full-time as a clinical research physician assistant (PA) in neurosurgery at University at Buffalo Neurosurgery. Coscia is excited to be part of the Pitt DPAS program and shares her experience being an online doctoral student. For students in health care fields, obtaining experience in a clinical setting is a cornerstone of their academic journey where they can finally put their coursework into real-world practice. In the University of Pittsburgh Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, residential and hybrid students are required to complete 42 weeks of full-time clinical experiences over the seven terms of their program. This includes at least one inpatient and multiple outpatient clinical experiences where they will learn to support a variety of patient populations. The clinicals are a progression of their learning experience as students take the foundation they’ve learned at Pitt and build on it by learning from clinicians outside of the DPT program.

Professor Susan L. Whitney from the Department of Physical Therapy was recently re-elected to serve as the vice president of the International Neurologic Physiotherapy Association (INPA), a subgroup of World Physiotherapy based in the United Kingdom. She will serve a three-year term and as part of her duties will be co-planning an international virtual neurologic meeting that will involve at least 25 world experts in stroke, Parkinson’s disease, vestibular disorders and spinal cord injury and another 20 people to plan the meeting that will be held in fall 2024. As vice president, she works with the practice, education, webinar and special interest group teams to improve neurologic physical therapy practice globally.

Beginning January 2024, students in the Pitt Doctor of PA Studies (DPAS) program will be able to register for the nation’s first digital health course offered to physician assistant (PA) students. Vice Chair for Innovation and Professor Dipu Patel who is leading the course says, “The curriculum was designed to harness the most current topics and trends in digital health and use them to inform and prepare students to improve their practice and care. This space continues to rapidly evolve and therefore, this course will continue to evolve as new tools, technologies, and research come to light.”

Pursuing a doctoral degree is a transformative intellectual journey. Most PAs welcome advancement within their scope of practice and are willing to engage in projects that foster professional improvement. The University of Pittsburgh Doctor of PA Studies (DPAS) program provides students with the education to independently design and conduct a quality improvement (QI) project, analyze data, evaluate corresponding literature and develop ideas contributing to their practice setting. As graduates from the first cohort in the DPAS program, we can attest to the benefits and necessity of this advanced degree.

On Jan. 2, 2023, sports fans around the world held their collective breath as they watched Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin suffer sudden cardiac arrest on the field during a Monday night football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. What they may not realize is they were watching a highly orchestrated medical rescue—one that is rehearsed day in, day out in every sports facility in the country, from schools and community parks to colleges, universities and professional athletic venues. Kevin Conley, associate professor and chair, Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition, notes that every team, every facility has an emergency action plan (EAP).

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) has evolved over the past 70 years and has been embraced by some members of the health care community, the HexAI Research Laboratory in the Department of Health Information Management (HIM) stands alone.  

According to Health Informatics (HI) Assistant Professor Ahmad P. Tafti, director of the Pitt HexAI Research Laboratory, “The HexAI Lab not only combines AI strategies with clinical data, it also improves AI-powered clinical applications by promoting AI explainability and interpretability.”

I am pleased to announce that Director of Admissions Jessica Maguire is now Executive Director of Student Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). In this position, she will provide strategic direction and oversight of admissions, advisement, student engagement and student services. She will advise and advocate for students and student groups, and collaborate closely with and advise the dean, vice dean, associate deans, department chairs and program directors.
