Dr. Lyon holds adjunct positions in the Department of Health Information Management and the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Her expertise is in lean health care – an adaptation of the Toyota Production System to the health care industry. She is associated with the nonprofit Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative (PRHI), where she helped to develop their nationally acclaimed curriculum for health care professionals and coached lean improvement efforts in a variety of health care settings. She is currently the director of organizational performance improvement at St. Clair Hospital, a large independent community hospital in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, and has helped raise its profile over the last decade to win top national awards in quality and safety. Dr. Lyon is also interested in lean health care applications for low resource settings and has visited hospitals in Russia, Malawi and Haiti. She earned her PhD in Sociology from Princeton University and her BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from U.C. Berkeley.
