Nizam Ahamed

Dr. Nizam Ahamed currently works as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition, working within the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory (NMRL) at the University of Pittsburgh. Ahamed completed his first Postdoc appointment as Faculty of Kinesiology, at the University of Calgary, Canada in 2019. Ahamed earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2014 from the University of Malaysia Perlis and his MSc in Computer Science at the University of Madras, India in 2004. Ahamed has the scholarly expertise in the field of biomechanics, gait, human movement and muscle function (e.g., EMG) with an emphasis on advanced data analytics, signal processing (e.g., fractal analysis), wearable technologies (e.g., IMU and GPS) and artificial intelligency (e.g., machine learning) for the optimization of human health and performance, injury risk identification and prevention. Ahamed has research publications with a recent focus on the use of wearable technology and machine learning methods to understand real-world biomechanical gait patters for running-related injury identification and prevention. Currently, Ahamed is using biomechanical gait data from wearable inertial sensors during load-carriage in military activities, paired with advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques to make clinical predictions and diagnostics tools to help track and treat musculoskeletal disorders, injuries and performance assessment. He looks forward to pursuing his passion for research in the field of human movement patters identification using more advanced technologies.
