Judy Heumann Speaking with OT Students
On Monday, September 12, renowned international disability rights activist Judy Heumann spoke virtually with the Pitt OT community. The hour-long discussion addressed disability advocacy, how health care professionals can relate to and assist patients with disabilities and how to become your own best advocate. Those in attendance had the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer segment with Heumann and learn more about her advocacy journey, her experience filming the documentary Crip Camp and that she believes New York pizza is better than California pizza!
This event would not have been possible without the efforts of second-year Occupational Therapy doctoral student Christie Cyktor, who organized and moderated the discussion and the support of the Department of Occupational Therapy and the University of Pittsburgh Student Occupational Therapy Association. Thank you to Judy Heumann for providing this rarified opportunity to speak with such a prominent figure within the disability community.
