The Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Certificate course offered through the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC guides current professionals on their leadership journey. By giving participants tools and helping them develop the skills they need to be influential leaders in their workplace, the course sets the stage for them to advance health care management, quality patient care and efficient workflows.
Kori Morgan completed the APP course last fall and is a nurse practitioner at UPMC Central PA in the Primary Care division. Currently, she is the program manager of the Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). Below, she shares her perspective on the APP course and what she gained from her experience at Pitt.
Q: How is the APP Course helping you achieve your workplace goals?
A: “The course gave me a broad understanding of the health care system and what's happening behind the scenes that you need a deep understanding of when you're going to be a leader. We learned about budgets, employee roles, and how to lead a division or department.”
“I'm currently educating my future workforce. We discuss what an APP is, their role and responsibilities, and their scope of practice.”
Q: Why did you choose UPMC/Pitt’s APP Leadership course over other programs?
A: “This course was recommended by one of my colleagues. He mentioned that training like this would be beneficial in my role transition. Being a part of this course would allow me also to build connections with other APPs across the region and help me grow as an individual.”
Q: What have you found most valuable from the course?
A: “I think having these resources available for future use. It has just been crucial for me in my role as I'm trying to find my way as a leader and as somebody other APPs can look up to as a peer and mentor.”
“All the modules in the course were beneficial. I don't think there were any that I didn't feel were relevant to me or my clinical practice.”
Q: Would you recommend this course to a colleague?
A: “Sometimes new leaders need to engage in difficult conversations in the work environment, and having these tools and resources available for them could be extremely helpful.”
“I’m considering retaking this course as a refresher, maybe in two or three years. There's always something new, right? You're always going to be learning. Health care is one constant learning cycle.”
“I have been promoting this course since I completed it. I’m recommending it to my peers and people I consider rising stars in the field who could benefit from it.”
