Michael J. Deem

Michael Deem joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in fall 2021. Previously, he was an assistant professor (tenure-track) at Duquesne University, with a joint appointment in the School of Nursing and the Center for Global Health Ethics. He completed a PhD in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame followed by the Pediatric Ethics and Genomics Fellowship at Children's Mercy Hospital (Kansas City).

Deem's primary research interests lie in bioethics (especially pediatric ethics and ethical issues in genetics/genomic medicine), philosophy of biology and medicine, and public health ethics. Having taught ethics to genetic counseling, nursing, and medical students, he also pursues research on interprofessional ethics education. His empirical research has focused on vaccine hesitancy in pediatric and family practice, and ethics education in health professional programs.

Deem also teaches in the Center for Bioethics & Health Law's Master of Arts in Bioethics program, graduate ethics courses for the Department of Human Genetics' MS Genetic Counseling and MPH in Public Health Genetics programs, as well as undergraduate ethics courses for our Rehabilitation Science program (School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences). He also directs Pitt's Consortium Ethics Program, which provides continuing ethics education to health care professionals in the tri-state region.
