Dr. Andrea Hergenroeder

Provost Ann Cudd has called upon Dr. Andrea Hergenroeder, associate professor, Physical Therapy, to guide Pitt undergraduate students as director of the Pitt Interprofessional Center for Health Careers (PIC Health Careers)

The PIC Health Careers was one of the first of its kind devoted to undergraduate health and pre-health interprofessional education, establishing a preeminent educational and advising infrastructure to support undergraduate students interested in the health sciences fields. In keeping with the University’s Personalized Education Initiative, the center assures robust education, programming, mentoring and advising for students aspiring to careers in the health professions.

Hergenroeder first joined SHRS as an adjunct instructor in 2002, became a faculty member in 2006, was promoted to associate professor in 2019, and appointed director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program’s residential offering in March 2020. With her extensive clinical expertise and managerial experience, Hergenroeder promoted excellence and innovation in teaching cardiopulmonary physical therapy. She has been recognized with the Innovation in Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh, the APTA Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy Educator Award, and the SHRS Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award, among others. She has been instrumental in guiding the program and its faculty and staff throughout the COVID-19 pandemic while simultaneously making substantial contributions to shorten the program’s overall plan of study and to develop the DPT hybrid offering. As the director of the PIC Health Careers, Hergenroeder will continue to teach in the PT Department, however, she will no longer continue in her role as director of the DPT program’s residential option.

Hergenroeder will share her mentorship and guidance with undergraduate students by creating opportunities for those who are undecided to carefully consider Pitt’s many health career options. "Andrea’s 25 years of varied experience and expertise spanning work as a physical therapy clinician, manager and educator make her a superb fit as the new director of PIC Health Careers," says Cudd.

Hergenroeder's appointment began July 1, 2021.
