Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Program Director Jennifer White
In June, Assistant Professor Jennifer White transitioned to her new role as the director of the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) program. Jennifer's academic path began at the University of Washington, where she earned a master’s degree in occupational therapy, later pursuing a Doctor of Clinical Science in Occupational Therapy with a concentration in clinical education at the University of Pittsburgh. This foundation set the stage for a career spanning over 17 years, focusing on occupation-based inpatient rehabilitation and acute care services. White’s knowledge in developing and managing early mobilization programs for clients requiring intensive care services and community-based occupational therapy services for underserved populations has been instrumental in transforming patient care.
White, a faculty mentor for the University of Pittsburgh's Student Occupational Therapy Association and the Coalition of Occupational Therapy Advocates for Diversity, has played an important role in shaping the next generation of occupational therapists. Her leadership and mentorship have been crucial in fostering a culture of inclusivity and advocacy within the student community. In 2023, White received the SHRS Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award, recognizing her excellence and dedication to the school’s teaching mission. This accolade is a testament to her exceptional teaching abilities and her commitment to nurturing the academic and professional growth of her students. In 2021, White’s approach to education was recognized with the SHRS Provost’s Award for Diversity in the Curriculum. This award celebrated her efforts for "challenging students across five courses to be inclusive of the diverse spectrum of people they will be serving in the future." Her commitment to diversity and inclusion has not only left an impact on the department but has also equipped her students to strive to be compassionate practitioners.

As White takes on her new role as the director of the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program, she brings with her a wealth of experience, a deep commitment to social justice, and a vision for a more inclusive and equitable future in healthcare.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to serve as the program director for our Master of Science in Occupational Therapy students,” says White. “Our international students consistently bring unique insights and perspectives to the Department of Occupational Therapy, and I remain impressed by the successes of our MSOT alumni. We have an incoming class of nearly 20 students from five countries who I am looking forward to meeting in person and having in the classroom. I am also thrilled to expand our mentorship program that we piloted in the spring of 2024 to help our incoming students transition to life at Pitt OT.”
