Clinical Participation Requirements

Admission Application Deadline: January 15

All admission documents must be submitted to CSDCAS AND verified by CSDCAS by this date for admission consideration. Any applications or documents received and verified after this date will not be reviewed for admission. We recommend submitting all documentation to CSDCAS by December 15 to allow time for verification before the deadline.

  • All applicants must apply through CSDCAS.
  • No application documents should be submitted to the school or department directly. Any documents sent to the school directly will not be reviewed for admission.
  • We will be communicating with you through CSDCAS. To be certain you receive these emails, please add CSDCAS to your accepted senders and check junk mail on a regular basis.

All applicants will receive, via email through CSDCAS, an application decision (admission offer, wait list, or denied) during the first two weeks of March.

Admission Requirements

Academic

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.        
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 (based on 4.0) is required. However, a GPA of 3.5 or higher is strongly recommended.
  • Applicants with a CSD (or similar) major for the baccalaureate degree will meet all prerequisite curriculum requirements. A grade below C- in a CSD major course is not acceptable and should be repeated.
  • Applicants that do not have a CSD (or similar major) should have a minimum of one 3-credit course in each of the following topic areas:
    • Anatomy of Hearing
    • Anatomy of Speech
      • These two classes are sometimes offered in one course, but both sets of anatomy must be covered in the coursework to be considered complete.
    • Language Development
    • Speech Science
    • Hearing Science
      • These two classes are sometimes offered in one course, but both topics must be covered in the coursework to be considered complete.
    • Transcription Phonetics

ASHA Requirements

To be eligible for clinical certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association you must meet the standards specified by the Association’s Council for Clinical Certification. This includes satisfactory completion of at least one three-credit course in each of the following areas prior to starting the graduate program:

  • Biological Sciences (Human Biology, Anatomy & Physiology)
  • Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry)
  • Behavioral Sciences (Sociology, Psychology)
  • Statistics (not research design)

Additional Requirements

Ability to satisfactorily perform all of the core functions for this profession.

Additional requirements for international applicants.

  • Verification of English Language Proficiency Verification is required unless the following apply:
    • The applicant is a citizen of a country whose official language is English
    • The applicant has completed a degree program at a regionally accredited institution in the U.S., or
    • The applicant is not a citizen of a country whose official language is English but has completed a degree program at an institution outside of the U.S. where the language of instruction is English and where the official national language of the country in which the institution is located is English.

GREs are no longer required for this degree program.

The application portal in CSDCAS opens on July 15. Transcripts should be received by CSDCAS by December 15th to allow ample time for CSDCAS to verify the transcripts. Your application and all required documentation should be verified by CSDCAS by January 15.

  • It is your responsibility to follow all CSDCAS instructions, check your applications progress through CSDCAS and meet all deadlines. Failure to do so may result in your application not being reviewed for admission.
  • Review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) posted on the CSDCAS applicant portal before submitting your application.
  • Complete all sections of the CSDCAS application.
  • Submit a minimum of three letters of recommendation.
    • Two of the recommendations must be from college-level instructors in your major with whom you took a course.
    • CSDCAS will only accept electronic letters of recommendation.
    • Please request that your three letters of recommendation be submitted as early as possible.
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended to CSDCAS.

It is highly recommended that you apply early to ensure that all of your application materials are received by the specific deadlines. The Admissions Committee will only review verified applications received from CSDCAS by the January 15 deadline. Of note, documents may take several weeks to be verified and should be submitted in December to avoid missing the January deadline.

Additional Information

Applicants who have completed the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree or higher at an institution outside of the United States are required to provide an Academic Credential Evaluations. The evaluation must be sent to CSDCAS.

International applicants must provide verification of English language proficiency. Scores must be from within 12 months of the date of the application. See this page for further information regarding minimum scores. 

  • Request official English Language Proficiency test scores be sent to the University of Pittsburgh from one of the following options. Minimum scores accepted and instructions for sending official test scores follow:

US Citizens who have received a degree from a country where English is not the official language will be required to submit English language proficiency scores - even if the program curriculum was taught in English.

CSD Admissions Committee

  • Reviews the applicant's orientation toward the profession of Speech-Language Pathology as well as his/her communication skills as revealed by written essays and statements in reference letters.
  • Reviews college transcripts to determine the applicant's ability to manage and excel in the program's rigorous course work.
  • Evaluates the applicant’s perceived potential to perform as a Speech-Language Pathologist.

The Admissions Committee does not require a personal interview for admission to the program.

Financial Matters: Tuition and Expenses

Tuition rates are established by the University of Pittsburgh. For current tuition and fee rates, please visit the University of Pittsburgh Tuition & Fees web page.

SLP students are classified as:

  • Graduate students in School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
  • First Professional degree program.
  • Then determine your in-state or out of state residency.

All SLP students will be charged tuition for:

  1. 4 academic terms, over 2 academic years at the flat full-time rate
  2. 1st summer session at the per credit rate (6-10 credits each)
  3. Some students may require a 2nd summer session to complete their program.  Credit load is typically 1-2 credits.

Please also be advised that students should anticipate costs related to laboratory fees, physical examinations, medical requirements (e.g., TB, Flu Shots), security clearances, and any drug screens required by their preceptorship sites.
