Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a car?

Students are expected to provide their own transportation to classes (on-campus option), clinical sites (both options) and the immersions (hybrid option), it is highly advisable for students to have a car since some of the clinical sites may not be easily accessed via public transportation.

University of Pittsburgh students enjoy the benefit of being able to use the local transportation system, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) for free within the local area.

Parking leases for Bridgeside Point are available upon request for on-campus students. Accepted students will learn this information during orientation.

Can I move to Pittsburgh if I am a hybrid student?

Yes, students are free to live anywhere in the United States as a DPT hybrid student.

Please keep in mind that moving to the Pittsburgh area will not guarantee a clinical placement in the Pittsburgh area. The program receive a specific number of placements from the clinical partners. On-campus, international hybrid students residing in the Pittsburgh area and hybrid students who are already from the Pittsburgh area and have a permanent address in Pittsburgh, receive priority for Pittsburgh-based clinical placements.

Additionally, moving to the Pittsburgh area will not provide increased access to the Bridgeside Point equipment and facilities. Hybrid students will only have access to these resources and lab spaces during scheduled immersions.

Can I switch from hybrid to on-campus or vice versa?

No, once the student has accepted their seat in the on-campus or hybrid option, the placement is final.

Where are clinical affiliation/internship sites located?

Most clinical internships (full-time and part-time) for the on-campus students are in the UPMC Health System and its affiliating hospitals and clinics. On-campus students will generally be placed in facilities within the Greater Pittsburgh region.

For hybrid students, clinical sites will be determined based on place of residence. Every effort will be made to identify a clinical site within a 60-mile radius of a student’s permanent place of residence or another location where the student has housing.

Learn more about the clinical placements on the Applied Skills page.

What are the differences between being a hybrid or an on-campus student?

The hybrid students will be involved in a blended curriculum of online coursework and immersive on-campus laboratory sessions.

Didactic coursework will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous remote content delivery. Other than the mode of delivery, curriculum content will remain consistent for residential and hybrid students.

On-campus students will complete hands-on lab sessions throughout the semester in the classroom. Hybrid students will attend immersion sessions dedicated to laboratory-related skills and testing throughout the program. Learn more about the Immersion sessions here.

Can I apply to the on-campus and hybrid option?

Yes, applicants will be able to indicate their first and second choice through their PTCAS application.
