Biography

While in her master’s program, Paola Esquivel was involved in a research project that explored the use of Lego robots and computer programs to enhance the academic performance of children with disabilities, which sparked her interest in the intersection of technology and rehabilitation. 

After completing her master’s, she worked in Italy, where she supported children with disabilities in both community and school settings. These experiences strengthened her commitment to developing innovative approaches that empower people with disabilities. She started her PhD program in 2022 under Associate Professor Mary Goldberg. Esquivel chose SHRS for its top-tier research in assistive technology as well as the expert faculty and strong assistantship packages.  

Her current research centers on the use of mainstream smart home technology, such as smart speakers, to promote independence and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. Her goal is to bridge the gap between technology and rehabilitation, making smart home technology more accessible and beneficial for all.
