Jason Bohland is a speech scientist, neuroscientist and engineer who directs the Speech Neural Systems Lab, part of the Brain and Auditory Sciences Research Initiative. His research team uses brain imaging, behavioral and computational methods to understand how our brains plan and produce speech. The overall goal is to build an increasingly detailed and mechanistic understanding of how speech is represented in the brains of typically developing speakers and individuals with speech disorders.
Bohland’s journey to this field was non-traditional, with formal training in engineering and computational neuroscience. His interest in speech and communication developed during his graduate studies, after falling in love with the complexity of the human brain. Bohland is enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring students, and especially about nurturing scientific curiosity and developing the skills necessary to understand and conduct research.
Prior to joining the CSD department in 2019, Bohland was faculty at Boston University and served as the Associate Director of the Cognitive Neuroimaging Center. He holds secondary affiliations with the Department of Bioengineering and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition.
