Valerie Shuman is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy teaching in the areas of geriatric and neuromuscular clinical practice. Shuman joined the department as a research physical therapist in 2017 and began working on her PhD in rehabilitation science under Jennifer Brach in 2019. She received her BA from Pitt in 2008 and her DPT from Duke University in 2012. As a clinician, she worked at Presbyterian/Montefiore hospitals and for Vincentian Collaborative Systems. She became a board-certified geriatric clinical specialist in 2018. Shuman's research focuses on improving quality of care for older adults with mobility limitations. She is the recipient of a Promotion of Doctoral Studies I scholarship and the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy's Excellence in Research and Adopt-A-Doc awards. Outside of work, Shuman chases around her young son, gardens and crafts.
