Rosa Fannie with her 2022 Physician Assistant Educator of the Year award
The University of Pittsburgh Department of Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) continued its bold moves across the academic landscape as two faculty members earned prestigious awards at the 2022 Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants (PSPA) conference.
For the sixth year in a row, an SHRS faculty member was awarded the Physician Assistant Educator of the Year. Rosa Fannie, director of Clinical Education for the Physician Assistant Studies residential program and assistant professor, was presented with the award for being an educator who inspires, stimulates and challenges her students and colleagues through outstanding contributions to physician assistant (PA) education and to the profession.
The award is a recognition of Fannie’s love of teaching, the impact she has on SHRS students, as well as the respect from her peers. Her passion for working with students isn’t limited to being a teacher, Fannie is also the faculty advisor for the PA Challenge Bowl team. She said, “This award symbolizes the time and dedication I have for our students, the relationships I have built with our clinical partners and putting the needs of our students first.”
Previous SHRS Physician Assistant Educators of the Year include Jamie Hammond (2021), Jason Hare (2020), Mary Allias (2019), Emily Murphy (2018) and David Beck (2017). Fannie says that the PAS program’s consistency in winning this award is a testament of its dedication to students and the PA profession. “I am grateful to work in a department that supports and empowers all of us to grow as educators.”

The PSPA also recognized Adjunct Assistant Professor Amy Haller as the 2022 Physician Assistant of the Year. The award honors a physician assistant who has demonstrated exemplary service to the PA profession and community and has furthered the image of physician assistants. Haller, who is also the co-director of the Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Certificate Course, is a strong advocate for promoting the physician assistant profession, enhancing excellence in health care through continuing education programs and providing access to quality care for her patients.
Haller said about winning the award, “It was a humbling honor to receive the 2022 PSPA Physician Assistant of the Year Award. When I reflect on the last 14 years serving as a physician assistant, I am filled with so much gratitude: for those patients that trusted me with their care, for the mentors that shared their time, for the leaders in the profession paving the way for the future, for the relationships built with colleagues, and most importantly for my family who has provided me unconditional love and support. This award is a symbol of my ongoing passion for the advancement and advocacy of the PA profession. I am looking forward to what the next decade of my physician assistant career shall bring.”
