Supervised experiential learning (SEL) sites for community/public health, clinical, food service and specialty rotations are guaranteed by the program on a yearly basis. Students’ experiential sites will be scheduled by faculty at the end of the spring term of the students’ second year based on matching parameters with available sites. The program considers each student’s learning needs, style and professional direction. Faculty will then match students to a site that best fits these parameters.
Students cannot request a specific site nor can a student find their own site.
Learn more about SEL on the Applied Skills page.
Entry to the program requires exposure to the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. If you are a University of Pittsburgh student, you can join the Student Dietetic Association for volunteer opportunities.
Most opportunities can be found in the community where you live or work. The profession is wide, varied and dietitians, or RDNs, are found in many venues. For example, volunteer at a local food bank, food pantry or farmer’s market!
Seek RDNs in your community that work in public health, private practice, community non-profit agencies, food markets, hospitals and outpatient clinics and ask them about the process for obtaining observation hours or setting up meetings to gain exposure to the field. Volunteer your time to assist with events, filing, making handouts or any other duties that may assist practitioners and provide you insights into the profession. There are often casual or part-time positions in health care, food service establishments and community agencies that may be available.
Also for current Pitt students: You can check out the Health Professions Experience SharePoint site for a listing of local opportunities. Pitt Passport login is required.
