Speech-Language Pathology students at Pitt are classified as:

  • Graduate students in School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
  • First Professional degree program.
  • In-state or out-of-state residents.

Then determine in-state or out-of-state residency.

All SLP students will be charged tuition for:

  1. Four (4) academic terms, over 2 academic years at the flat full-time rate
  2. One (1) summer session at the per credit rate (6-10 credits each)
  3. Some students may require a second summer session to complete their program. Credit load is typically 1-2 credits.

Please also be advised that students should anticipate costs related to laboratory fees, physical examinations, medical requirements (e.g., TB, Flu Shots), security clearances, and any drug screens required by their Clinical Practicum Placements each semester.

Although it is not possible to predict exact program costs, we have developed a document as you consider potential costs of a graduate program.

The Carol E. Lang and Howard N. Lang, MD Scholarship for the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Award

The Carol E. Lang and Howard N. Lang Award was established in 2013 to provide tuition support for students pursuing a master’s degree in Communication Science and Disorders with a specialization in speech language pathology. Recipients must be a resident of one of the following counties: Allegheny, Beaver, Bedford, Butler, Fayette, Green, Indiana, Somerset, Washington or Westmoreland, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients may re-apply for the scholarship in subsequent years if the recipient continues to meet all eligibility requirements.

The Emeritus Award

The Emeritus Award was established in 2002 from an endowment funded by an emeritus CSD faculty member. This award recognizes outstanding academic achievement. Students are nominated by faculty members for each award year. The competition begins in the Fall Term.

The Audrey Holland Endowed Award

The Audrey Holland Endowed Award is designated to support undergraduate and graduate students to design and conduct research in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders. The awardee may use the award for research related supplies and equipment, subject participation, statistical support, travel to present research findings, and other related items. Students self-nominate for this award.

Audrey Holland, long time Pitt CSD supporter and noted Aphasia clinician/researcher, will be missed by her Pitt family.

 

The Bernard Rousseau Student Resource Fund in Communication Science and Disorders Award

The Bernard Rousseau Student Resource Fund was established in 2020 to provide support for education-related expenses for students in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders, including, but not limited to, books, lab fees and travel. Funds will be administered with a preference for individuals from underrepresented groups within the school.

Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities and Related Disorders (LEND)

The LEND Center at the University of Pittsburgh is one of 60 LEND programs in every state, the District of Columbia, the United States Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and six Pacific Basin jurisdictions preparing trainees from a wide variety of professional disciplines to assume leadership roles, ensure high levels of interdisciplinary clinical competence, and enhance the ability of clinicians to diagnose, treat, and manage complex disabilities in youth and adolescents.

LEND Leadership Trainees are eligible to earn a stipend.

Schweitzer Fellowship

The Institute for Equity-Centered Leadership (TIECL) is a 16-month leadership development program focused on health equity. Fellows work with and serve marginalized communities to address social determinants of health. Each Equity Fellowship cohort is interdisciplinary and diverse, allowing for students from different backgrounds and fields of study to draw on the collective knowledge and resources of the Equity Fellowship Class.

Schoolwide Funding Resources

Matriculated SHRS students at the undergraduate and graduate level have the opportunity to apply for the following scholarships and financial award opportunities. Some awards are offered through the University and others are school-wide.

Merit Scholarship

The merit scholarships comprise three awards administered under a common application process. The purpose of these scholarships is to acknowledge and aid students who demonstrate high-level scholastic achievement and financial need. Multiple scholarships are awarded per year, pending available funds.

Selection of Awardees Details

Awardees will be selected by the SHRS Executive Committee. The amount of the awards will depend on available funds and the student’s financial needs and essay composition.

  • Students only need to apply once and will automatically be considered for all three awards.

    • SHRS Alumni Endowed Scholarship
    • UPMC Endowed Scholarship
  • Students can only receive the scholarship once as an undergrad and once as a graduate student.

Awards for the 2024-2025 term will be announced in mid-January 2025 and be applied to the student’s spring bill.

The Dr. Timothy C. and Mrs. Cynthia B. Sell Student Award

Donors Dr. Timothy Sell and Mrs. Cynthia Sell have established an endowed fund to promote diversity and inclusion within the SHRS student body. The SHRS Faculty Executive Committee will choose the award recipient(s) in mid-January and the award will be applied to the student’s spring tuition bill. Awards will be presented annually pending receipt of qualifying applications.

Current Pitt Students – How to Apply

Current Pitt students can access PittFund$Me by following this process:

  1. Login to your MyPitt account and search for PittFund$Me. Select the icon and you will be directed to your Student Dashboard.
  2. Once in the system, you will be asked a series of basic questions that will match you to scholarship opportunities from the University of Pittsburgh and outside organizations (all external scholarships have been fully vetted for legitimacy so that you can apply confidently).
  3. The more questions you answer, the more scholarships you can be matched to (you will only see Pitt scholarships when they are open and if they require an application).
  4. For matched scholarships, click the Apply button to navigate to the external organization’s website where you can submit your application.
