Preparing for Communication Science and Disorders Graduate Programs
There are additional course requirements needed to apply to CSD graduate programs, such as speech-language pathology. They may be completed prior to or during the post-baccalaureate year.
- In order to meet requirements specified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), before entering a graduate program, the student must also provide transcript evidence of completion of at least one three-credit course in each of the following areas:
- college mathematics
- statistics
- social/behavioral science (sociology or psychology)
- physical science (physics or chemistry)
- biological science (human biology or human anatomy/physiology)
- Additional recommended courses may include child development/developmental psychology.
- This is a required course if the student is seeking education certification in Pennsylvania after graduate school.
- Documented completion of observation with a certified clinician is required prior to commencing a graduate program.
- The recommended number of observation hours is 25.
- It is also recommended that you complete at least 10 of these hours prior to starting the post-baccalaureate program. You can check the ASHA website under ‘Find a Professional’ or the local directory for clinicians in your area. It is recommended that you shadow in a range of settings to gain perspective on the full scope of practice.
Post-Baccalaureate Coursework and Prerequisites
These courses can be taken at any other ASHA-accredited university. Courses may have another name or be combined (ex: anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing; speech and hearing science). It is important that students take classes that cover the following core areas:
- Introduction to Linguistics
- In-depth course in Transcription Phonetics
- Anatomy and Physiology of both Speech and Hearing
- Speech and Hearing Science
- A course that covers the principles of assessment and remediation in the field
- A course in language development through a CSD department
Unfortunately, faculty/staff will not be available to evaluate courses that each applicant or student plans to take at other universities to determine equivalency.
