Application System

Junior Entry:

Degree Completion: Complete transfer application and pay the application fee through the main Pitt Admissions office followed by the ULTA application.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (based on 4.0)
  • Junior Entry: 60 credits are required to start the program.
    • Students who will have completed a minimum of 54 credits may be eligible to apply.
    • Applications may be submitted while prerequisite coursework is in progress.
  • Degree Completion: 51 transferrable credits and that any credits taken towards paramedic certification/licensure are not included towards the required college credits.
    • Upon entering the program, currently certified paramedics are awarded 39 credits for having their certification.
    • Applications may be submitted while prerequisite coursework is in progress.

Prerequisite Coursework

Grade of C- (C for transfer), 3 credits minimum.

  • Seminar in Composition*, 1 course
  • Writing Intensive, 1 course. ENGCMP 0400, 0450, 0530, or 0535 recommended.
  • Oral Communication, 1 course. COMMRC 0520 preferred; 0310, 0500, 0510, 0530
  • Algebra, 1 course. Exemption accepted.
    • MATH 0031 or higher math required
  • Statistics, 1 course. STAT 0200, 1000 or 1100 required.
  • Diversity*, 1 course
  • Literature*, The Arts*, Creative Work*, Historical Analysis*, or Philosophical Thinking or Ethics*, 1 course

Applicants are required to provide transcripts from all U.S. universities, colleges or other higher education institutions attended.

Admitted students will need to submit official transcripts to the SHRS Admissions Office prior to enrolling in classes.

Experience

Junior Entry: Emergency Medicine Technician (EMT) Certification: Proof of certification will need to be uploaded in the ULTA application.

  • Applicants are encouraged to take EM 1102 with lab (4 credits) or may provide a copy of their EMT card with their application.
  • Admitted students who have not taken EM 1102 will be required to complete the credit by course examination process.
  • Out-of-state students will need to apply for reciprocity. If accepted into the program, assistance is provided.

Degree Completion: Current certification as a paramedic/Advanced Tactical Paramedic (ATP), or equivalent.

Personal Statement

Submit a two- to three-page personal essay (no more than 1,500 words and 1.5 spaced) discussing how the applicant’s experiences shaped their choice to apply to the Emergency Medicine program that demonstrates their awareness of health care professions and their long-term goals.

Applicants should discuss how their lived experiences influenced their choice to enter into health care and how those experiences contribute to promoting equity, diversity, inclusion and sense of belonging for future patients and colleagues.

Also, applicants should highlight other areas of interest, extracurricular activities and leadership experiences.

Technical Standards and Skills

Students enrolling in the program must meet the technical standards as established in the PA DOH Functional Position Description for Paramedics.

Application Review Process

Interview with Emergency Medicine Faculty

  • Junior Entry Application: The program will contact applicants in the spring term to schedule an interview as part of their application. 
  • Degree Completion Application: The program will contact applicants to schedule an interview with faculty.
