The second annual SHRS Dean’s Staff Excellence Awards were announced by Interim Dean David C. Beck during the State of the School on April 10. The awards recognize SHRS staff members for their dedication and exemplary contributions that uplift the mission and values of SHRS and the Pitt community.

“Our SHRS staff consistently demonstrate exceptional dedication in their work with students, faculty, alumni and partners to advance the mission of our School,” said Beck. “This annual awards program continues to be a meaningful way to recognize those efforts. Whether through formal accolades, new opportunities or everyday appreciation, recognizing our staff is essential to fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence.”

He continued, “We hold our staff in the highest regard and are committed to supporting their professional growth. It was inspiring to see the volume and thoughtfulness of the nominations we received in this again this year, and I look forward to seeing who we celebrate in the years to come.”

The Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award was presented to Desiree Harrison, administrator in the Office of Online Learning. Harrison was recognized for participating in diversity initiatives and enhancing the culture of inclusion for SHRS. She is an active member of the Racial Equity Consciousness Institute (RECI) at Pitt and created a streamlined communication for all RECI members to share impactful resources and raise awareness throughout and outside of SHRS.

“I am honored and blessed to be chosen as the 2025 winner for the Dean’s Staff Award for Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. After certification from the Racial Equity Consciousness Institute from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, I am driven as an action agent to ‘illuminate the vaccine for racism’ here at SHRS and neighboring communities. Education is a pivotal combatant against complicity and complacency. I look forward to continuing efforts by being a champion for racial literacy and justice in the years to come.”

Leaf was honored for her commitment to leadership and innovative problem solving that increases efficiency and success. Leaf’s efforts to reimagine operational and academic support structures have reinforced the School’s academic excellence and furthered its reputation.

“I am incredibly honored to be selected as the 2025 recipient of the Debora L. Miller Award of Leadership and Operations. This recognition is deeply meaningful with its link to former Vice Dean Miller, a strategic thinker and leader. If it were not for the amazing and talented teams that I have the privilege to work alongside in the department and school none of this would be possible. Their support and dedication inspire me every day. This award provides a meaningful boost as I continue striving to serve our students, staff and faculty at the highest level possible.”

“There’s something really special about being recognized for work you genuinely enjoy. I’m honored and grateful to receive the Student Impact Award. I’m especially thankful for the support of my supervisor, Natalie Baney, and the amazing team I get to collaborate with every day. SHRS has been a dynamic environment to grow within—our students, staff and faculty are true helpers who make anything seem possible. It’s a privilege to support them and knowing that others see the impact and value of our work is incredibly energizing.”
