Within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Michael Deem teaches in the Rehabilitation Science program and serves on the School’s Vaccine Exemption Committee. Deem’s aim in teaching is aiding students in developing critical and reflective skills through their engagement with ethical puzzles, conceptual questions, historical events, philosophical and scientific disagreement and professional and social challenges. Deem believes that developing these skills for the students enhances a student’s study of other subjects and in professional and civic life. He focuses on cultivating an intellectually open and civil environment in the classroom. I find that cooperative activity among faculty and students in seeking answers to difficult ethical, social and clinical questions is a challenging but highly rewarding way for health science and bioethics students to become better thinkers, speakers and intellectual peers.
